Troubleshooting VoIP call quality
How overloaded hardware, slow internet and weak cell reception degrade call quality, and how to check each one.
VoIP is a reliable way to communicate, but audio problems can still disrupt calls. One common cause is an overloaded computer. This article covers how hardware usage affects calls, how to check it on Windows and macOS, and the other factors worth ruling out.
How overloaded hardware affects call quality
When your computer's hardware is maxed out, VoIP performance suffers. High CPU or memory usage leads to delay, jitter and poor audio. Keeping headroom on the machine is essential for a clear connection.
Checking hardware usage on Windows
- Open Task Manager - press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager. - Check CPU and memory - the Performance tab shows real-time graphs. The Processes tab shows which applications are consuming the most.
Checking hardware usage on macOS
- Open Activity Monitor - press
Command+Space, typeActivity Monitorand press Enter. - Check CPU and memory - the CPU tab lists running processes and their usage; the Memory tab shows how much each one is holding.
Assessing internet speed
Slow internet also degrades call quality.
- Visit a reputable speed test site such as speedtest.net.
- Run the test to measure your download and upload speeds.
For good VoIP performance you need a stable connection with at least 100 kbps of upload and download per concurrent call.
Checking cell reception
If you or the person you are speaking to is on a mobile device, weak reception degrades the call. To improve it:
- Move somewhere with better signal strength.
- Avoid thick walls and large metal objects.
- Connect to Wi-Fi where possible for a more stable call.
